Knitting to help prevent infant abuse

Posted: Updated:

Some eastern Iowa knitters are helping to bring awareness to shaken baby syndrome.

This year is Iowa's fourth year with people participating in a knit-in to help prevent infant abuse.

Knitters gathered their purple yarn at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids to create purple caps to give to new parents to bring awareness of normal infant crying and the dangers of shaking a baby.

"Knitting baby hats is something I love and giving back to other people," said knitter Paula Grahs. "If it helps prevent one baby from being hurt, if we can get the word out on that, everything we do is worth it."

Grahs has been knitting for the campaign since it first kicked off four years ago.

The hats will be distributed in November.

Other knit-ins will take place in July and August.
