POSTVILLE (KWWL) - Hall Roberts' Son in Postville opened as a retail outlet back in 1864. Today, the distribution business has 28 full-time employees with the average employee staying with the company for more than 20 years.

The company was founded by Hall Roberts when he was just 19 years old.

"He had an untimely death in the early 1900s, so his son Harvey took over and rather than change the name of the business it went to Hall Roberts' Son," said Chris Hoffert.

When Harvey Roberts passed away in 1949, the first general manager was hired. Two years ago, Chris Hoffert became general manager and is only the fifth person to lead the company.

"Our mantra is faith first, family second, and the business third," said Hoffert.

Hall M. Roberts, the third generation of the Roberts family, is currently president of the board of directors. He's never been in charge of the day-to-day business, but at 86 years old, he still comes to the business every day.

Hall Roberts' Son has three dry storage warehouses in Postville, plus office space. There's no manufacturing, the company brings in products such as pet food and feeding ingredients and then distributes them in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa.

Chris Hoffert believes the company's secret to success for 150 years is customer service.

"This type of industry is still people industry. A handshake and a smile is good," said Hoffert.

Hoffert said it's an honor to be part of a company that has such deep roots in the community.
