Rising Mississippi River closes Dubuque Ice Harbor flood gates

Posted: Updated:
DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Dubuque closed the flood gates to the Ice Harbor Friday due to the rising Mississippi River.

As of Friday evening, the river was at 16.4 feet, which the National Weather Service calls "action stage." The NWS predicts the river will crest early Sunday around 17.2 feet, putting it in minor flood stage.

To mitigate flood effects, the city is not only closing the Ice Harbor gates, which will cut off the Port of Dubuque Marina from boat traffic, but it's also closing flood gates at Maus Lake and pumping water to maintain the water level behind the gates. City staff members monitor around the clock the pumps at East Fourth Street, near the Shot Tower.
