Elkader residents nervous about rising river levels

ELKADER (KWWL) -

The rising Turkey River levels in Elkader have some residents and business owners worried about potential flooding. On Thursday evening, the river was measured at 16.57 feet, with the flood stage for the river being 12 feet.

Crews began sandbagging the river at around 10:00 p.m. on Thursday night.

Although Emergency Management Coordinator Joel Biggs is hopeful the river levels will begin to fall, business owners are concerned.

Mary Klink owns to businesses in downtown Elkader. She said Thursday she spent the day watching the rising river, worried about what is in store for her two businesses.

"There is no problem right now, but there is not a whole lot we can do just yet. Hopefully it recedes before we have any problems," Klink said Thursday.
