UNI-CUE evacuates after lightning strike

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The University of Northern Iowa Center for Urban Education in downtown Waterloo evacuated Thursday around 8:30 a.m. after lightning apparently struck the building.

People inside at the time believe lightning hit the air conditioning unit on top of the building.

The Waterloo Fire Dept. was on scene and says there wasn't a fire, but heavy smoke inside the building. Firefighters say people were forced to evacuate due to unsafe carbon monoxide levels.

Asst. Director Nancy Scoggins Rose with UNI-CUE says more than 40 kids were inside at the time of the incident.

"All of a sudden lots of lights started blinking... then all of a sudden the building filled with smoke. The upstairs was so thick you couldn't see it," Scoggins Rose said.

All children and staff were able to return inside the building around 9:45 a.m.
