Woman's ashes, urn spared as tornado destroys Delaware County home

Posted: Updated:
DELAWARE COUNTY (KWWL) - The National Weather Service confirms an EF1 tornado touched down in Delaware County Monday night.

Crews said wind speeds reached 95 mph and a tornado that was 50 yards wide traveled 17 miles.

In its path was the Herzmann family farm located north of Manchester.

The family's home was built in 1978 and has survived two tornadoes.

"I watch the news all the time and I always see in every spring storm there's a tornado that ruins somebody's life and you feel sorry for them, and then it hits you how they feel," said Dean Herzmann.

Herzmann built the home with his wife, Candy, who died from cancer in 2012.

"When she died this is what we had left. Her home. Her memories are here," said Dana Ralfs of Cedar Rapids.

Ralfs said her mom died at home, and after she was cremated, her ashes and urn remained in the living room.

Herzmann said while the tornado ripped the roof off his house and knocked down two silos, his wife's ashes and urn were untouched in Monday's storm.

"She wanted cremated and I don't, so I was going to have her put in the casket with me when I die," said Herzmann.

Herzmann said he wasn't sure what he was going to do next, but he told KWWL his house is considered a total loss.
