Cedar Rapids cleans up from storms

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - In Cedar Rapids, severe thunderstorms knocked down trees and power lines late Monday night into early Tuesday morning. Thousands of people went without power and many spent the day Tuesday cleaning up their homes.

Mike Oakley has been living in Cedar Rapids for around 20 years and he's never seen so much storm damage in his yard.

"All the trees from the neighbor's yard fell on top of my house," said Oakley. "We got a couple holes poked in the roof and knocked the fence down and are waiting for the insurance adjustor to show up."

He wasn't the only one on the block spending the day cleaning up.

"It's bad," said James Fleagle. "If you go around the whole neighborhood, even a few blocks later, a bunch of trees are down. A lot of them down."

At Trinity Lutheran School volunteers and professionals worked to get as much water out of the building as they could and prepared for more rain that may come.

"The roof was blown off," said Mark Mueller, Lead Administrator. "Then water obviously came into the building and it's run down the hallways and basically a lot of our school is flooded."

The school is one of the many places that spent several hours in the dark.

Thousands of people in the city went without power for hours as Alliant Energy crews worked to catch up. An Alliant spokesperson tells KWWL they plan to have everyone's power restored before they go to bed tonight. If more storms come in, they're ready to repeat the process.
