Republican Party of Iowa to replace Chairman Danny Carroll

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) - Iowa Republicans look to make sweeping changes, and will soon have new leadership.

New board members were sworn in Saturday, and have already decided to oust current Chairman Danny Carroll and Co-Chairman Gopal Krishna. The shift in power makes Carroll's term less than three months.

According to the Des Moines Register, the change sends a message to Republicans across the state, as the party looks to forgo control from liberty Republicans and move toward a conservative, establishment-controlled party.

Board members said they want a fresh start, and GOP activists have said they want strong leadership heading into the 2016 caucuses.

Prior to Carroll's appointment, A.J. Spiker chaired the Republican Party of Iowa for a little more than two years. Danny Carroll was then appointed at the end of March, earlier this year.

The Register reports one name mentioned as a possible replacement for Carroll is Jeff Kaufmann, a former state representative.

The board is scheduled to vote on a new chairman and co-chairman Saturday, June 28.
