ALLISON (KWWL) -
Gladys Wubbena lost her husband of 63 years back in 2005. That loss inspired her to join the Prayer Shawl Ministry at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison.
"I needed something to do to keep myself busy," said Gladys Wubbena.
Initially, about 10 women were part of the ministry to knit or crochet shawls.
"Now we only have a couple ladies doing it, and Gladys is at the top of our list. She does the most," said Pastor Ruth Ann Shriver.
Shriver said the Prayer Shawl Ministry's main mission is to give comfort to the sick.
"They could wrap that shawl around them, and feel comforted and know the prayers of the people in our community were helping them at that time or supporting them," said Shriver.
The shawls are also used for special occasions at St. James Church, such as weddings and baptisms. Gladys Wubbena said she's made 120 shawls for the church.
"I like to do it after I've had my supper at quarter after 5. Then I sit here and crochet maybe for a couple hours, and then I'm tired and go to bed," said Gladys Wubbena.
The church provides the yarn, but the work is all Gladys Wubbena. Pastor Ruth Ann Shriver said the best way to describe Wubbena is faithful. Wubbena's been a member of St. James Church for 71 years.
"People get busy with things, and their hobbies come and go, but Gladys has been just extremely faithful," said Shriver.
Gladys Wubbena plans to keep making these shawls as long as there's yarn to crochet.
