5,000 dozen kolaches baked for annual Kolach Festival

The 40th year of St. Ludmila Catholic Church's Kolach Festival kicked off this weekend.

Churchgoers, neighbors and families in Cedar Rapids enjoyed fun activities including live bands, carnival rides and the always popular Kolach Festival drive-up.

A kolach is a fruit-filled pastry, and in just two days they've baked over 3,000 dozen.

"This area of Cedar Rapids, the southwest side we're not too far from Czech Village," said Tim Flaherty, Kolach Festival chair. "A lot of Czech immigrants here settled this part of of town, so it was something we started doing because a lot of the families made kolaches and it was a good way to raise money for the parish."

They plan to make more than 5,000 dozen kolaches and sell them all.

The three-day festival will start back up Sunday morning until all the kolaches are sold.
