City Park Pool finally opens after delays

Posted: Updated:

After two failed attempts at opening the City Park Pool in Iowa City, Saturday they officially opened their doors for their 65th swimming season.

Pool staff say the pool's opening was delayed twice  - once due to the harsh winter and another time for a leaking water pipe.

The delays prevented pool preparations on its $650,000 renovation project. The project includes a bigger kid wading pool that's ADA compliant along with extended decks and improved diving board ladders among other improvements.

"Come here today to see the new renovations, but I was just a little disappointed," said Julie Jensen, who has been going to the City Park Pool for more than 40 years. "Tor that kind of money I think they could have added a little twisty slide to make it more fun to bring people here more than to North Liberty or Coralville area."

Before the official opening, a dozen life guards were putting the finishing touches on the pool

Like many, Jensen is excited to finally enjoy Iowa City's only outdoor pool in the city's Upper City Park.

"For the first day I thought it was going to be open I thought it was going to be cool and fun, but there's nothing to do here," said Jensen.

However, swimmer Samiya Batie says she likes the renovations.

"I thought it was pretty nice," said Batie. "That's why we come here to have fun."

Other pool regulars say the renovations are nice and the expanded sunbathing deck makes it even better.

"The new baby pool is nice, but for that kind of money I think it could've been better," said Jensen. "Like coming to the Iowa City pool, we used to have pool passes here, but the kids were too bored with nothing to do."
