Friends plan memorial for woman killed by drunk driver

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) - A memorial ride has been scheduled for Sunday, June 22, in memory of Kate Leekley.

Leekley was 20 years old when she was killed last year after a drunk driver crashed into the motorcycle she was riding with her boyfriend Derek Martie.

According to authorities, Leekley and Martie were riding a motorcycle along Dubuque Road in Black Hawk County last June when a man swerved over the center line and crashed into them, sending them into a ditch.

Investigators charged Bryan Cornwell of Oelwein for operating while intoxicated and vehicular homicide.

In March, Cornwell was sentenced to 32 years in prison, but he could be eligible for parole after serving seven years.

Now, a year after the crash, friends of Leekley have organized a memorial ride to remind people about the dangers of drinking and driving.

All vehicles are welcome.

The ride is set to start at 10:30 a.m. at Riverview Recreational Park in Waterloo.

The route will go past the crash site into Jesup before ending at Riverview Recreational Park.

Any donations from the ride will be split between Mothers Against Drunk Driving and a charity that supports horses.
