Iconic Hamburg Inn No. 2 to remain closed for a few more weeks

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - It's a long-standing business.

"My parents started in 1948," said David Panther, Owner of Hamburg Inn No. 2. "Back then we lived above the restaurant."

But right now, the Hamburg Inn No. 2 is closed as employees clean up from a fire four weeks ago. It was caused when freshly laundered towels spontaneously combusted.

"It was quite the shock -- especially the way it happened," said Seth Dudley, General Manager.

The smoke damaged the ceiling of the basement, meaning the floors upstairs must be replaced. The smell of smoke is still in the air, for now.
The walls are bare -- the historical pictures are off being cleaned. Those famous pictures of presidential candidates hoping to win the Iowa caucus, and the restaurant's Coffee Bean Caucus.

"That's the stuff you can't replace," said Dudley. "We got lucky there. Everything we lost is easily replaced."

As lucky as you can be for a restaurant that's faced two fires in 20 years -- the last in 1994 -- but there was never a question of whether they would re-open.

"I just can't imagine a fire putting an end to Hamburg Inn," said Panther. "I'm hoping that it continues on and on."

The restaurant hopes to re-open in about three weeks.
