IOWA CITY (KWWL) - An annual, all-female air race will feature a stop along the way in eastern Iowa -- a first for the state.

The Iowa City Municipal Airport will be the sixth of 10 scheduled route stops during this year's Air Race Classic, a 2,338-mile race beginning Monday.

More than 100 pilots in 52 teams in the Air Race Classic race from Concord, California, to New Cumberland, Pennsylvania, over the four-day period.

The Iowa City airport is expecting most of the pilots to arrive on Tuesday and Wednesday.

It's the first year an Iowa airport has been chosen as a Classic site. Previously, the Iowa City Municipal Airport was chosen to be a stop in the Air Race Classic in 2011, but inclement weather forced the Classic to change sites.

Pilots race for personal bests in any small stock airplane of their choosing.

The Air Race Classic began in 1977 and is the longest-running air race for women pilots. It follows in the tradition of the All Women's Transcontinental Air Race, which began in 1947, and the Women's Air Derby, which began in 1929 because women pilots were barred from entering air races at that time.

A gloomy and rainy afternoon didn't stop people from making it out early to the campgrounds Friday. By the afternoon, Scales Pointe Campground and Marina in North Liberty, was full of RVs, tents, and houseboats ready to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend. "We don't worry about the weather. We just put a tent up, put a poncho on, and drink in the rain," Mike Kirk said. Kirk said he's been camping at the same spot for five years now and that it's the best place to be. ...More >>
