DUBUQUE (KWWL) - The Peat family from Dubuque is among dozens of families scheduled to meet with lawmakers at Capitol Hill this month to discuss hundreds of legally adopted children who are stuck in another country.

The Peats had the adoption process of their two children suspended as they were getting ready to bring them home because government officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) stopped issuing exit permits, a document required for children to legally leave the country.

Erin Peat told KWWL she will join other families stuck in the international adoption process and meet with Sen. Chuck Grassley on June 24, and Rep. Bruce Braley on June 25.

The Peats, along with hundreds of other families in the U.S., are hoping elected officials will encourage Secretary of State John Kerry to support their families by pressuring Congolese officials to resume the issuance of exit letters which would allow many of the children to come home.
