$50,000 grant to Peoples Community Health Clinic for cancer awareness

Posted: Updated:

The American Cancer Society is awarding Waterloo's Peoples Community Health Clinic a $50,000 grant to provide screenings for colorectal cancer, as well as cancer awareness and education.

It's anticipated the grant will help the clinic screen some 400 individuals for colorectal cancer over the next year. The $50,000 grant is part of a $6.4 million gift from the Walgreens Way To Well Commitment program. That's a program which involves Walgreens customers and their engagement in supporting the American Cancer Society’s Community Health Advocates in implementing Nationwide Grants for Empowerment and Equity (CHANGE) program.

Says Jennifer Lightbody, Chief Executive Officer of Peoples Clinic, “Colorectal cancer is an illness that early and regular screening can prevent. The CHANGE grant will help us reach many who face barriers to getting that screening, whether that is due to lack of resources, education or awareness.”

Peoples plans on increasing cancer education, outreach, and patient navigation services and provide accessible cancer screenings to its patients. This grant will lay the groundwork for ultimately reaching the goal set by the American Cancer Society and National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable of 80% screening rate for colorectal cancer screenings by 2018.

The American Cancer Society collaborates with community health partners to reach individuals in communities with high burdens of cancer and limited access to cancer screening. Through the CHANGE program, the Society provides resources to increase cancer screening rates in those communities. Since 2011, CHANGE has awarded 258 grants to partners reaching undeserved communities across the country; educating over 480,000 individuals about cancer risk and prevention, and providing over 140,000 cancer screenings.
