Summer meal programs begin Monday as the school year comes to an end

Posted: Updated:
Summer brings dreams of warm temperatures and vacation time; but for some families, it also presents a considerable challenge.

Many children across northeast Iowa rely on free or reduced-cost breakfast and lunch meals throughout the school year. To assist those families, the Northeast Iowa Food Bank will provide free meals to youth during the summer.

This is the first year for the Food Bank to hold its Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided to all children without charge, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.

Meals will be provided at the sites and times as follows: Salvation Army beginning June 9, breakfast at 10:00 a.m. and lunch at 12:30 p.m., and the Boys and Girls Club in Evansdale starting June 23 with a 3:30 p.m. snack time. Both sites will be serving Monday through Friday until school resumes.

"Food insecurity continues to be an issue in our community as one in five children in Black Hawk County struggle with hunger. Food insecurity is described as a lack of consistent access to adequate amounts of nutritious food. The Summer Food Service Program is one of six Food Bank programs that work to solve hunger in Northeast Iowa," said Barbara Prather, Executive Director of the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.

The Northeast Iowa Food Bank provides nutritious food and hunger education to about 200 nonprofit organizations who assist the hungry, and to individuals who need food assistance to sustain life. Last year, the Food Bank distributed more than five million pounds of food within a 16-county service area.
The Food Bank runs several programs to serve children and senior citizens, including the BackPack Program, Kids Cafe and Elderly Nutrition Services. The Food Bank also provides for under-served communities through the Mobile Food Pantry program.
