Cedar Rapids Farmers Market kicks off

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

One of the largest open-air farmers markets in the Midwest kicked off for the season in downtown Cedar Rapids Saturday.

The first downtown farmers market of the season brought more than 16,000 people and more than 200 vendors to downtown Cedar Rapids.

Every season it's a big draw, offering fresh produce, meats, baked goods, hand-crafted jewelry and a lot more.

The downtown farmers market takes place every first and third Saturday through September, rain or shine.

During the farmers market the city honored five people with the Five Seasons Citizenship Award.

The Cedar Rapids residents were selected by having a history of great citizenship, strong community service, and developing projects that benefit other residents.

"For all the work that they've done over their careers, not just for this past year," said Cedar Rapids Mayor Ron Corbett. "So we had a recognition ceremony for them and they all received a $1000 to be donated to the charity of their choice."

Corbett says choosing just five  people wasn't easy.

Each resident will also be featured in Cedar Rapids' Our CR Magazine.

They were nominated by another resident, and then selected by the Cedar Rapids City Council.
