Relay For Life kicks off in Dubuque

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Dubuque's Relay For Life kicked off in the Port of Dubuque Friday night. This year more than 5,000 people will walk along the McGraw Hill parking lot to celebrate people who have battled cancer, they'll remember loved-ones lost to the disease, and help raise awareness in the battle against cancer.

The walkers will be switching off and walking through the next 12 hours because cancer doesn't sleep. Chris Wand is the co-chair for Dubuque's Relay For Life.

"(During the walk) you go from light, to dark, to light. So it kind of follows the path and journey for someone who has cancer. You know they are in a very positive state before they have cancer, then they find out they have cancer and they are have a dark period, but they come through it and they are a survivor and then the light happens again," Wand said.

Currently walkers have raised more than $175,000 in the Dubuque County Relay For Life.
