Dubuque Relay for Life kickoff

Posted: Updated:
DUBUQUE (KWWL) - More than 5,000 participants will team up for Dubuque's Relay for Life on Friday, June 6 starting at 6 p.m. at the McGraw Hill parking lot.

Their mission is to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and provide participants with an opportunity to fight back against the disease.

Participants camp overnight and take turns walking or running around a marked track. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event.

Relay events take place until Saturday morning, June 7.

"We will celebrate a world with more birthdays, as well as honor those lost to cancer. The progress we've made together - as a community, as volunteers, as survivors and as leaders has been tremendous," said Jill Hogstrom, volunteer Relay For Life of Dubuque event co-chair.

"By lending your support to the Dubuque Community Relay event his year, you'll be supporting the American Cancer Society's efforts to finish the fight and bring an end to cancer as we know it."

Relay For Life will include its Luminaria Ceremony which takes place after sunset, honoring the community's cancer survivors and remembering those lost to the disease. Participants will circle a track surrounded with glowing luminaria bags bearing the names of loved who lost their battles with cancer.
