A Shellsburg man was seriously injured Thursday night when he was thrown from his motorcycle after rear ending a van.

The Linn County Sheriff's Office says 58-year-old John E. Hicks was eastbound on Blairs Ferry Road at around 5:14 p.m. Thursday when he rear-ended a van that was stopped at the intersection with Deer Ridge Drive.

Hicks was first taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, but was later flown to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Sergeant Andy Humphrey says Hicks' injuries are considered "life threatening."

The driver of the van, 21-year-old Ashley A. Geels of Cedar Rapids, was uninjured.

Humphrey says Geels was wearing her seatbelt and Hicks was wearing a helmet

The accident remains under investigation.
