RAGBRAI Pre-Ride going from Waverly to Independence Friday

WAVERLY (KWWL) - A group of bikers gathered in Waverly Friday morning on the Wartburg College campus, gearing up for their sixth departure of the RAGBRAI Pre-Ride.

In 43 days, the 42nd annual RAGBRAI event will kick off in Rock Valley. Every year, directors and experienced cyclists inspect the route before bikers embark on the trek across the state.

Cyclists examine roughly 418 miles during the Pre-Ride, looking at road conditions, traffic patterns and also the towns hosting overnight stays.

RAGBRAI Director T.J. Juskiewicz said so far, road conditions along the route have been fairly decent.

"We've got an amazing group of county engineers, DOT officials that are always looking out for cyclists and motorists, trying to make the Iowa roadways as safe as possible."

Juskiewicz said if there are any imperfections, he notifies engineers or local officials while also warning cyclists of any hazards along the way. He also adds part of the responsibility is on the cyclist, as bikers should operate in the safest ways possible.

Directors also make sure each host town has enough supplies for bikers prior to the event. Juskiewicz said the Pre-Ride isn't all work and no play, as bikers may take part in taste-testing from town to town.

"I think we have some pie waiting for us in Sumner... We're really looking forward to going to independence tonight, I heard they have a feast for us over at Bill's Pizza, so we're looking forward to that one," Juskiewicz said."

The Pre-Ride concludes Saturday, June 7 with bikers departing Independence at 7 a.m., and ending in Guttenberg.
