CORALVILLE (KWWL) - A Coralville police officer sustained minor injuries but saw his squad car heavily damaged after a vehicle hit his parked squad car along Interstate 80 westbound Thursday.

Officer Jeffery Barkhoff was assisting other Coralville Police officers who were investigating a crash near the intersection of I-80 and I-380 when his vehicle was hit by a semi traveling west on I-80 west of Highway 965 in Coralville.

Barkhoff's squad car was "positioned in a manner to forewarn oncoming traffic to slow down and move to the inside lane as they approached" the crash site, according to Coralville Police Chief Barry Bedford.

Barkhoff had to be extricated from his vehicle by emergency personnel. He was taken by ambulance to an unnamed hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released Thursday morning.

The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the crash involving Barkhoff.
