Waterloo firefighter runs marathon to help Camp Kesem

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) - A Waterloo firefighter is working to raise money in support of a camp who helps those with cancer.

Nick Anderson will also be participating in the 550 Relay, a race that supports cancer survivors, in Des Moines on June 23.

Anderson is running in memory of his father, who died from pancreatic cancer.

He has a personal goal of raising $10,000 -- that's nearly one-fifth of Iowa's team goal of $55,000. All of the money he raises will go to Camp Kesem.

It's an organization that empowers college student leaders nationwide to create free summer camps for children affected by a parent's cancer. In summer 2012, Camp Kesem operated 37 camps in 22 states across the country.

Anderson has been holding fundraisers to help him meet his goal, with the most recent on Thursday at Jameson's Public House in downtown Waterloo.

Anderson is also offering a "Meaningful Mile" donation, where donors can come to Des Moines and run a mile with him for a minimum donation of $25.

To donate to Anderson's fundraiser online, you can do so on the website: http://www.crowdrise.com/550iowa2014/fundraiser/nickanderson3
