Waterloo Elks Club offers free tours Saturday night

Posted: Updated:
The Waterloo Elks Club is making a comeback, and hopes Cedar Valley residents want to be a part of it all.

The public is invited to attend a free Elks Club Red Carpet event this Saturday night, June 7.

The Waterloo club is celebrating the Lodge's 120 years in the Cedar Valley. Saturday night from 5 to 9, the public is invited to tour the Elks renovated facility in downtown Waterloo. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks # 290 Waterloo Lodge is located at 407 East Park Avenue, just across the street from Lincoln Park.

It's all part of the club's recent comeback. Last July, the Waterloo Elks Club fell on hard financial times. A local bank foreclosed on the Lodge, in an effort to recoup a loan it made to the Elks Club for the 2007 renovation project.

Longtime Elks member, John Eveland, stepped in to lead a major fundraising effort to save the Elks Lodge from foreclosure. Eveland recruited a number of Cedar Valley investors, who put up enough money to work out a deal with the bank.

BPO Elks #290 goes back to the year 1894, but, the current building was built in 1924. The major building renovation in 2007 cost more than 2 and a half million dollars, but came at a time when the club was losing money.

The Club is slowly turning that around and hopes to attract several hundred new members. The Elks Club is also involved in helping local veterans, youth and community projects.

Tours of the Elks Club will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday and the Elks Gatsbys restaurant will also be open for anyone wanting to make dinner reservations. Dinner reservations at Gatsbys can be made at 319-234-7568.
