Rod Blum wins 1st Congressional District GOP race

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Dubuque businessman Rod Blum won the Republican nomination for Iowa's U.S. House 1st Congressional District race.

Blum was competing against fellow Republicans Steve Rathje and Gail Boliver.

Blum and his supporters watched the primary election results roll in at Courtside Bar and Grill in Dubuque.

The mood was that of excitement as Blum quickly took the lead in the Republican nomination for the 1st Congressional District race.

Blum is no stranger to the race. He ran for the spot in 2012 but lost to Independence Republican Ben Lange.

Having that experience helped him this second run, Blum said.

The candidate said accepting the Republican nomination was very emotional in front of friends and family Tuesday evening.

"The last 14 months I lost a very close friend of mine during the campaign, and on March 11th my mother died," Blum said.

On a lighter note, he added with a smile, "my mother had some dementia and she always thought I was running for president against Barack Obama. I always tried to explain to her that I'm not running for president."

Overall, he said, "it was a tough time, a very emotional time to be going through the stress of the campaign and then also the loss of my mother."

Blum said he looks forward to the coming months.

"I look forward to talking to the other side and engaging them in discussions about our economy," Blum said.
