Homeowners fight development, cite flooding

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Some Waterloo residents of Summerland Park are fighting a proposed housing development near Orange Rd. and Dysart Rd.

Developer Brent Dahlstrom wants to build condos and 12-plexes in the neighborhood, but current residents told the Planning and Zoning Commission Tuesday that they already have flooding issues, and further development would exacerbate that. One resident faulted their developer, who Dahlstrom reps said is not related to the current project. Kyle Helland, representing Dahlstrom, said they plan to contain within the new project, but that they can't engineer this fix without approval.

"So, I'd like to think anything we do in the process of developing the property, we're going to reduce the runoff and control the runoff," Helland said.

The homeowners, on the other hand, say they want a plan up-front, because they've been burned before.

"It's going to be a disaster," said Karla Brown, resident of the neighborhood. "We're going to be taking on even more water, and I didn't even think about it coming right down that road into my backyard."

The commission voted to approve the re-zoning for the project, but didn't approve the site plan change, in an effort to give the homeowners more time to resolve their legal issues.
