Cleaning underway after vandals damaged Waterloo church

"It was like an emotional punch in the stomach," said Pastor Garry Moore as he walked through the doors of Burton Avenue Baptist Church in Waterloo.

Sometime Friday night, thieves broke in a back door, stole computers and audio equipment, then took the fire extinguishers off the wall and sprayed the foam everywhere.

Daniel Hambly with Hambly Restoration and Cleaning has been in the business for nearly 13 years. He's cleaned up his fair share of messes, but he says this is one of the worst cases of vandalism he's ever seen.

"It's a shame that people have so little respect for property and then on top of it they go into a place where people worship God," said Hambly.

While surveying the damage, Moore even noticed drops of blood throughout the church as if someone cut themselves while damaging the place.

Moore says this won't dampen their spirits but he wants the people responsible to hear this message.

"When my savior hung on the cross being treated the worse possible, he said father forgive them for they know not what they do and I want to forgive you but I want you to realize for your best God has established authorities to deal with this for your best," said Moore.

Cleaning crews say it may take several weeks before the church is cleaned one hundred percent and it's unclear if services will be held there on Sunday.

Waterloo Police say they do have surveillance video, but when KWWL asked to see it they did not call back.
