Chickasaw County Attorney: No comment on rape investigation
NEW HAMPTON (KWWL) -
It's been more than 10 weeks since a rape was reported inside New Hampton High School, and New Hampton Police Chief Mike Anderson won't confirm whether his department has received the rape kit from the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Crime Lab.
Anderson said a rape kit was mailed to DCI in Ankeny on March 25th, a day after he said a sexual assault was reported in the boys' locker room.
On Tuesday, Anderson said he had no comments about the investigation and deferred questions to Chickasaw County Attorney Patrick Wegman.
However, Wegman said he can't comment on cases currently under investigation.
Wegman, who has been the Chickasaw County Attorney since 2003, said he has not received DNA evidence from DCI or the New Hampton Police Department, but he said the investigation is "moving forward."
When asked if mailing the rape kit could interfere with the case, he said it is common practice for law enforcement agencies to mail evidence, particularly when they don't have someone to transport the evidence to Ankeny.
Wegman said after lab testing is complete, the next step is to get together with law enforcement agencies and determine whether charges will be filed.
