Cedar Rapids residents still feel safe despite bank robberies

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - Bever Park in Cedar Rapids is home to a playground, a pool, and Old MacDonald's Farm, but it's just across the street from a Guaranty Bank branch that's seen armed robberies twice in recent weeks.

"I'm not worried or scared about it," said Maiana Wilson, who lives in Cedar Rapids. "I think the police have it under control."

Police say they're actively investigating the bank robberies there and the others in the city.

In most cases -- including the two at Guaranty Bank -- the robbers have gotten away. Police have only made arrests in one of the five cases.

"Knowing that they were armed robberies makes me a little bit more concerned about being in this area with children, but I don't think it would deter me from still coming," said Amber Berglund, who lives in Marion.

That's the common feeling among parents out at Bever Park. While they're worried, they don't want to keep the kids home.

"It is concerning, but how much will you be afraid and how will it stop your normal life?" said Sue Ryan, who lives in Waterloo.

For some, a trip to the park is OK. However, that doesn't mean they feel safe in the area at all times of the day.

"It's kept us from moving to this area," said Cody Meyer, who lives in Marion. "My daughter's school is right here and we'd love to be in an area closer to her school. But with shootings and stuff, the shootings blocks away and then there's bank robberies, we're not going to be in this area."
