UPDATE: Cedar Falls police investigate early morning homicide

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) - Cedar Falls Police say they need your help to find a suspect in a deadly shooting early Sunday morning.

Officers were called to reports of gunshots in the 1800 block of Tremont Street just after 1:30 Sunday morning.

At the scene, officers found Norman Carroll Gant, 21, of Waterloo in a yard with life-threatening injuries from a gunshot wound. Gant was then transported to Sartori Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Cedar Falls Police Chief Jeff Olson says the shooter is still at large, but he doesn't believe there is any immediate threat to people in the Tremont Street area. He says he can't go into any more details about the investigation or why police believe that.

Eric Myszka lives just houses down from where the shooting happened. He was hosting a party when he said he heard four consecutive shots.

"We debated whether or not it was fireworks or not and it distinctly sounded like gunfire," said Myszka.

Myszka says this is activity is very unusual for the neighborhood.

"It's unfortunate that some people have decided to do things like this in this area because I've lived here, I grew up in this neighborhood. My grandfather built the house I live in and it's a great area so it's obviously a fluke and something that won't happen again," said Myszka.

Besides Myszka's party there was another house party near where Gant was found, but it's still unclear if the victim or the gunman came from that party.

"With all the other things going on and our theme party happening at the same time it's just a really strange sort of circumstances that happen together at the right time I guess. I guess our party ended with a bang," said Myszka.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed at the State Medical Examiner's Office in Ankeny.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the Cedar Falls Police Department at 319-273-8612 or Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers at 1-855-300-TIPS.  Information may be given anonymously.
