WATERLOO (KWWL) - It's first day of the Boys State singles and doubles tennis tournaments.
The Class One-A tournament is being held this weekend at the Byrnes Tennis Tournament.

This has been a special season for the Decorah Vikings--and long time head coach Reg Laursen a retired Luther College math professor---in his second stint as Viking head tennis coach.

Decorah which qualified two doubles teams for state--will also compete in the state team competition next week after winning a district championship.

And today it was Decorah's un-seeded doubles team of Carl Sand and Kaleb Ulring that pull off a shocker upsetting third seeded team from Pella in a grueling 3 hour 3-set match-- before beating a team from Clarinda in straight sets to advance to the semifinals.

Coach Laursen knew they had it in them.

It was a tough day for the state tournament host Waterloo Columbus Boys tennis teams.

The Sailors doubles team and both Columbus singles players have been eliminated from championship and consolation consideration.

The Sailors' Connor Barnhard was seeded third in the state tournament--losing his first round match to Cam Long of Dubuque Wahlert who advanced to the semifinals-- and Connor Barnhard fought through cramps but lost his consolation match in three sets.

It's also been an emotional time for outgoing Columbus activities director Aundra Meeks --after more than 20 years of service as football, basketball and track. Meeks was forced out of his position due to restructuring at Waterloo Columbus.

Meeks has taken a coaching position of the football staff of Tom Wilson at West Des Moines Dowling high school...But it is still difficult for him to leave the Columbus home--a place he has spent most of his life.
