Cedar Rapids police unsure what's led to bank robber spike

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - Cedar Rapids has seen a recent spike in bank robberies, and police aren't sure why.

There have been five bank robberies in Cedar Rapids since late April -- including one bank which was hit twice.
  • 4/28: US Bank, 2350 Edgewood Rd SW
  • 4/30: US Bank, 129 16th Ave SW
  • 5/2: Hills Bank and Trust, 240 3rd Ave SE
  • 5/16: Guaranty Bank, 2711 Bever Ave SE
  • 5/29: Guaranty Bank, 2711 Bever Ave SE
Police have only made arrests in one case -- the one at Hills Bank and Trust, where witnesses were able to provide police with an accurate description of the subject.

Officers aren't sure whether the robberies are connected though they are looking into the possibility. Officers are working on the cases to present to the county or federal attorneys.

KWWL also reached out to the Guaranty Bank, which was robbed twice in a two-week span. Executives there had no comment.
