Dubuque County Fair Officials seek cash loan

DUBUQUE COUNTY (KWWL) -

The Dubuque County Fair Association says low attendance and rising energy costs that past couple of years have lead to some money woes. "We hope to have about 60-70,000 people (at the fair). we've been a bit under that mark just over the last four years," Fair Manager, Jamie Blum said.

Blum said the lower attendance is caused by the unpredictable weather during the six day fair.

"It's hard to blame the weather, but at the same time when you are doing an outdoor event you know you have to be weather proof and you know we can't," Blum said.

The Fair Association has asked the Dubuque County Supervisors for a $100,000 loan.

"They didn't come in and say we need the money, they said if you come in and help us we will repay it," Dubuque County Supervisor, Wayne Demmer said.

The Dubuque County Supervisors advised the Dubuque County Fair Association to create a formal proposal to be discussed between the two organizations. Blum said the dubuque county fair association is currently working on a proposal and hopes to set another up another work session with the Dubuque County Supervisors on or before June 16th.

Dubuque County Fair organizers said despite the organizations financial bind, the Dubuque County Fair will go on no matter what.

"We want to continue to have the great operation that we do. We are just hoping for a little help right now until we can get passed that. We have every intention of asking for a loan and paying that back as quickly as possible. We feel we can do that," Blum said.

The six day Dubuque County Fair is set to begin on July 22.
