Highway 100 extension in Cedar Rapids finally under construction

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - Traffic delays and orange cones are getting to be a common sight around Edgewood Road in Cedar Rapids, where Highway 100 ends.

"I try to avoid it, but sometimes you just have to," said Martin Clancey, who lives nearby.

The Iowa Department of Transportation is asking for patience from drivers as they work to extend Highway 100 from Edgewood Road all the way to Highway 30.

The project has been in the works for more than 40 years, and now the DOT says construction should wrap up by 2020.

City and county leaders have been pushing for the project for years. Extending Highway 100 will provide a new way to drive through Cedar Rapids, helping reduce traffic on other major roadways, including Interstate 380.

"Where they go stop, where they see the doctor, always seems to be in different parts of the community," said Paul Trombino, Iowa DOT director. "Having a good, solid route that allows that efficient movement is a critical piece and it really reduces congestion long-term for the community."

Getting the funding lined up for this $200 million project was a challenge. Now the DOT says it will use a combination of state and federal funds.

Environmental concerns about the project were another roadblock, leaving drivers wondering if the extension would ever happen.

"At least they're working on it now," said Clancey.

While there's some headaches now, many are excited for the benefits in the future.

Highway 100 will provide another bridge across the Cedar River, which will be elevated above the 2008 flood level.

In 2008, most of the city's bridges flooded, and Interstate 380 saw extra traffic as people tried to get through the city.
