Iowa becomes more veteran friendly

Posted: Updated:

Iowa became more veteran friendly this Memorial Day as Iowa Governor Terry Branstad signed the Home Base Iowa Act Monday.

It's an effort to attract veterans to Iowa and match them with quality, high-paying jobs.

The Home Base Iowa Act exempts military pensions from state income tax, allows private companies to give preference in hiring and promoting veterans, and expands eligibility for the Military Homeownership Assistance Program.

Under the new law, Iowa licensing boards are also adopting rules allowing credit for military training and experience in the licensing process.

Monday, Branstad also signed a bill to provide an additional homestead credit for disabled veterans.
