Ciara Miller helps send soccer balls to children at orphanages
PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. (KWWL) -
Ciara Miller just graduated from Prairie du Chien High School.
This past school year, she was president of the nonprofit Passing on Hope, which sends soccer balls to children around the world.
"We knew there was a lot of organizations that already bring them medicine and clothing and school supplies, but we wanted to bring them happiness and joy. Show them there's good in the world," said Ciara Miller.
Passing on Hope was started in 2012 by Trevor Hanson. He got the idea in Spanish class while learning how children in foreign countries love soccer, but often don't have actual soccer balls to use.
"They have plastic bags with rubber bands and twine around them," said Miller.
So far, soccer balls have gone to children at orphanages in Haiti, Colombia, and Uganda.
The group is currently working on sending soccer balls to Vietnam and Liberia. Hopefully by the end of this summer, 100 soccer balls will have been sent out thanks to Passing on Hope.
"Most people are really amazed by the fact we came up with an idea, and we took action on it," said Ciara Miller.
The assistant principal and counselor at Prairie du Chien High School said Ciara Miller is a strong leader.
"She takes on leadership roles, especially in the area of service. She's very involved in the community, and she's out there often donating her time," said Jennifer Gallagher.
The nonprofit makes most of its money through T-shirt sales and community donations. It costs about $250 to buy 20 soccer balls. The soccer balls are then deflated and sent with people going on mission trips.
"You see bright shining faces with kids with a shiny new, red soccer ball, it brings joy to your heart, and that's why we do it," said Miller.
Miller said the group chooses to send soccer balls because it's about giving the children a happier, better quality of life.
Miller and founder Trevor Hanson will both be at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville next school year, and they plan to start a club there for Passing on Hope.
