DUNKERTON (KWWL) - The 2014 Alive and Running 5K in Dunkerton is coming up on Saturday, June 14th. The race starts at 7:30 a.m. at the Dunkerton Gospel Hall at 301 Carroll Boulevard. It's organized by Ryan Nesbit and Troy Belmer, two friends from Dunkerton.

"We started this because we lost our friend, Rodger, when he was 15 years old at Dunkerton High School. He committed suicide, and it was really tough on us for a lot of years. We decided to do something to give back and really raise awareness. We really want to reach out and let them know suicide's not what you want to do," said Troy Belmer.

The best way to sign up is to click here. The cost to register is $15, if you sign up by May 31st. As of June 1st, the cost is $25.

The Alive and Running event kicks off on Friday, June 13th with a sky lantern liftoff at dusk across from the school in Dunkerton.

"On Friday night at our sky lantern liftoff we'll have a guest speaker coming from California. He lost his teenage daughter a few years back, and they've found our event. They've been to a lot of suicide events," said Belmer.

Troy Belmer hopes people who've been to the event before come back again this year and bring a friend.

"People come up to us every year they were worried about coming, They didn't know what to expect. They'd never experienced this. It was their first suicide loss, and after being here they realize they're not alone," said Troy Belmer.

Proceeds from the Alive and Running 5K go back to suicide prevention in the form of research, scholarships, and anti-bullying education.
