Tri-County Drug Task Force faces potential budget cuts

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) - The future of the Tri-County Drug Task Force is teetering on how much federal funding it'll receive.

Since 1991, the task force has been known to investigate and bust drug-related crimes in Bremer and Black Hawk Counties.

The Tri-County Drug Task Force receives hundreds of thousands of dollars to fund the personnel, their benefits and overtime. However, due to federal funding cuts, the force could face a 42 to 45 percent budget cut.

Corbin Payne, a Waterloo police lieutenant who is assigned to the Tri-County Drug Task Force, said he's worried the grant money won't be enough.

"It's going to take a pretty good hit on the community if these cuts in fact do happen," he said. "Who's going to take up the responsibility of the long-term narcotics investigations and the narcotics being shipped in or transported in? Patrol officers aren't going to have time for that."

Payne said he expects to learn how much grant money the Tri-County Drug Task Force will receive sometime by early June.
