DES MOINES (KWWL) -
Iowans diagnosed with HIV increased in 2013, according to a recent state report, but remain below the 2009 peak.
A total of 122 Iowans were diagnosed with HIV, the virus that can lead to AIDS, in 2013, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health in a report released Friday.
The "2013 State of Iowa HIV and AIDS End-of-Year Surveillance Report" shows an increase over diagnoses in 2012, but the number remains below the state's peak of 126 in 2009.
Most of the Iowans diagnosed were males, though the report noted an uptick in the number of females and those older than 45 being diagnosed with HIV.
Those ages 25-44 accounted for 44 percent of all diagnoses of HIV. Those 45 and older made up 41 percent.
Forty percent of those diagnosed with HIV were considered to be in a later stage of the virus.
"We cannot emphasize routine testing for HIV enough to primary care providers in Iowa," said Randy Mayer, chief of the Bureau of HIV, STD and Hepatitis with the IDPH. "(Testing) may be one of our best strategies for reaching people who are unaware of their infections and are at risk of transmitting HIV to their partners."
