Waterloo Schools again offers summer meal program

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Waterloo Schools is again gearing up to feed hundreds of kids this summer through their annual summer food service program.

Starting June 16, meals will be provided to children at no charge.

Last year, the district served 38,000 lunch and breakfast meals.

School officials say that number has been the same, if not increased, in the last few years. They say the need is there as they see the same kids come through year after year.

"There's several kids at home that aren't having breakfast or lunch at home, or the parents are gone," said Heather Bathen, Waterloo Schools food services director. "It's a hot meal for these kids. It gives them an excuse to get out of the house also."

The program is sponsored by the USDA.
