1 person hurt after train hits car in Guttenberg Thursday

Posted: Updated:

One person is in the hospital after a train collided into a car Thursday morning in Guttenberg.

Railroad workers on the scene told KWWL a person drove around under the railroad crossing arms as they were going down. They say the person then saw a train was coming, panicked and jumped out of the car before the train hit it.

Valerie Rohner lives near where the collision took place. She said the crash was so loud, she thought the train derailed.

"I heard this loud crash -- it sounded like a train had fallen over," Rohner said. "I looked out (of my house) and it came to a stop really fast. It was about 9 o'clock and it was here for hours."

Glenn O'Rourke owns a business near where the crash took place. He said he was in his shop when he heard a loud noise.

"There has been noise because of the work that they are doing on the track and crossings; so, once again, when I heard things down in my shop, I just kind of ignored it," O'Rourke said. "I just figured they were up here working, but then I heard the siren and kept hearing the bells going off at the crossing. That's when I thought maybe I would take a peek (at what happened."

The driver who jumped from the car was injured and taken to the hospital. Authorities we spoke with weren't able to give us an update on that person's condition.

Officials with the Guttenberg Police Department said they hope this incident serves as a reminder to people that when the railroad gates go down signaling a train, they need to stop.
