2014 Special Olympics kick off Thursday

AMES (KWWL) -

The 2014 Special Olympics' Torch officially kicked off Thursday with a torch lighting ceremony.

The torch was carried by law enforcement officers running in four-mile increments from Des Moines to Ames.

Once in Ames, the torch was used to ignite the Flame of Hope and to start the Special Olympics Summer Games.

Special Olympic athletes started competing Thursday morning.
