Coe College gets $3.4 million for energy reduction program

Posted: Updated:

Coe College in Cedar Rapids received a $3.45 million loan to help the private institution on a major energy reduction program.

The loan was given by the Iowa Economic Development Authority to implement energy-saving projects on the campus during the summer.

Some projects include changing almost all the lighting, adding window unit seals and coverings, switching manual thermostats to digital ones, among other sustainability initiatives.

"Our mission is education," said Coe College president David McInally. "So improving the campus and reducing our energy use helps save money, but I think the more important impact is that students get to see what is happening and hopefully carry this forward with them when they graduate to their own communities and workplaces.

Coe is planning to repay to loan with the money they'll save on utilities.

All energy-saving projects will be completed by fall semester.
