Host family values time with Black Hawks

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Even after a tough loss to the Indiana Ice in game five of the Clark Cup Finals, a host family for the Waterloo Black Hawks say it's been a great experience.

The teams played in front of a packed Young Arena Tuesday night.

"Yes it is, and the cowbells will be ringing in Young Arena tonight," said Mark Van Bisien.

The Hawks lost the lead in the final minutes of the game, ending 3-2.

Van Bisien and his wife, Deanna, had an extra stake in the game -- they host two members of the team.

"And if we have high schools students, which we do this year, then they're here to the end of the school year," Deanna said.

Nick Olczyk and Cooper Watson live with the Van Bisiens. The couple said since they opened their home to the boys, it's kind of like watching their own children play.

"It's fun to watch them develop, both as individuals as they grow and mature throughout the year, and how they mature in their sports career," Mark said.

The couple has two sons, and they said hosting the Black Hawks isn't just for the players.

"We tell them how lucky we are to have them in our homes," Deanna said.

"They're great role models for the boys," Mark said. "...When they were little, and now they're in college and they were great role models growing up in my 14 years doing this."
