FT. DODGE (KWWL) -

A woman in western Iowa says a kid shot her with a high-powered air rifle, sending her to the hospital with a punctured lung.

Franchessca Petraline, 22, of Fort Dodge told WHO-TV she was checking on some kids near a pond early Sunday morning when it happened. She says a child around 10 years old shot her with a pellet gun.

The pellet went through her ribs, punctured her lung and lodged in her back.

"I didn't even think it went in my body," Petraline said. "I thought it fell out somewhere. I definitely didn't think it went almost all the way out. It almost went completely out and through my back."

Doctors

say the air rifle had the same killing power of a small-caliber handgun.

“It’s no joke. Those things are pretty serious,” Petraline said. “I think I got really lucky because, had that been anywhere else, even my neck, my face, on the other side of my chest or even in the wrong part of my chest, it could have killed me.”

It is legal in Iowa for children to have air rifles.
