Gun & meth found in crashed car

Posted: Updated:

Two people from Marshalltown face charges after a gun, methamphetamine and paraphernalia were found in crashed car.

Sunday police say an officer tried to stop a vehicle as the driver was pulling into a private drive on Center Street.

According to police, once the officer was out of the squad car, the driver backed up, nearly striking the squad car and sped away.

The officer decided not to pursue the vehicle, concerned with the public safety risks.

Records show that roughly five minutes later, the Marshall County Communications Center received a report of that vehicle crashing into a ditch. Officer say the vehicle struck a bridge, slid several hundred feet and rolled at least once.

Michael Grommet, age 29, and Rachel Berrones, age 26, were taken to the Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center. Both are expected to survive their injuries. Once released from the hospital, the two were taken to the Marshall County Jail.

Police searched the vehicle and found a handgun, drug paraphernalia and a small amount of methamphetamine.

Grommet faces a charge for possession of a firearm as a felon. Berrones faces charges for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
