Cedar Rapids church still recovering from Floods of 2008

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Members of a Cedar Rapids church continue to recover from the Floods of 2008.

Members of Salem United Methodist Church broke ground Sunday morning where their new $2-million faculty will be.

The church lost its 100-year-old downtown house of worship after the Floods of 2008.

The church congregation has spent several Sundays over the past six years worshiping at different sites before finding a temporary location on the city's southwest side.

The $2 million project will have space for offices, a library, and Sunday school rooms.

Kathy Wickham has been a member of Salem for more than five decades, but the groundbreaking is a day she thought she’d never see.

“At my age, I didn't think that this would happen in my lifetime, but it is just so glorious to think that God has been with us throughout everything,” said Wickham. “The Flood of 2008 was so devastating, the building was so sacred to so many of us who had been there. Generations of people worshiping together, for me that was one of the things that drew me to the church.”

The church has about 200 active members.

They've been worshiping at the temporary facility since 2010.

“Our God is a powerful God, he has everything under his control,” said Wickham.
