Bags tournament in memory of Jacob Langerman raises awareness about suicide

WEST UNION (KWWL) - "He wasn't a Green Bay fan, he was a fanatic," said Duane Langerman.

Sadly, Jacob Langerman won't be attending anymore Packers games. He took his own life in November 2012. The Upper Iowa University graduate was 23.

Family members believe it started the night before Thanksgiving when Jacob got back to West Union from his teaching job at Clarinda Academy and met some friends at a local bar to catch up.

"He got to be drinking a little too much and drove and got caught driving while drinking," said Duan LDuanerman.

Duane Langerman said son was devastated and embarrassed by his poor choice. A few days later, Jacob committed suicide.

"I think he was too proud, and you can't let pride affect your life that way. There's always someone to talk to," said Langerman.

The Langermans want to raise awareness about suicide, encouraging others to ask for help. That's why family and friends are hosting "The Second Annual Banger Classic." It's a bags tournament on Saturday, May 24th at 11 a.m. the Echo Valley Speedway in West Union.

"With this, it's kind of been a way to heal our group. It's been tough not having him around, but at the same time knowing we're doing something in his name," said friend Robert Helgerson.

The money raised goes to scholarships for North Fayette Valley students. Last year, a $300 scholarship was awarded. This year, four grads got $500. Money raised from the tournament coming up next weekend will provide scholarships to students graduating next school year.

"Having his friends help out with the bag tourney, it's like he's still here. We still expect to hear him come in at night. You think it gets easier, but it doesn't," said Duane Langerman.

Langerman said his son would love the idea of a bags tournament. He said Jacob was willing to help anyone, and he'd be happy the tournament is helping students pay for college.

If you'd like to help, you can sign up on the "The 2nd Annual Banger Classic" page on Facebook. You can also just show up on the May 24th.

The cost is $20 for a team of two people. You're guaranteed to play at least four games. The event also includes food and other entertainment.
