DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Holy Family Catholic Schools' Our Lady of Guadalupe Spanish immersion program in Dubuque made it to the top eight in the nation.

Every year, the education office of the embassy of Spain in the US hands out a Spanish Immersion School of the Year Award in the US.

This year, Our Lady of Guadalupe in Dubuque placed in the top eight finalists for the award.

The Spanish Embassy gives the award to schools in the US that show excellence in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) methodology, using Spanish and English.

The competition is open to public, private and charter schools nationwide at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

The award requirements dictate the school must implement language programs following the CLIL methodology in Spanish and English, as well as use Spanish in the program at 50 percent of instruction time for elementary schools, 35 percent of instruction time for middle schools and 25 percent of instruction times for high schools.

More information on Holy Family Catholic Schools' Our Lady of Guadalupe Spanish Immersion Program in Dubuque will be available at an informational meeting and discussion on May 28, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., in O'Malley Hall at St. Anthony Church in Dubuque.
